The Texas Electon Code sets out a number of requirements for political parties and for voters. You can read all about it with this 943 page book. Political party candidates are selected by either a primary election or by a convention process. The Republican and Democratic parties have a statewide primary, while the Green and Libertarian parties must use the convention process.

Green Party candidates are selected in a local convention process, not in a primary. In each county where there is a county level Green Party there is a consolidated precinct convention and a county convention on the second Tuesday of March. Participants vote for candidates to become the Green Party nominee for the political office in the general election in November. The precinct and county conventions are scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, 2026, 7-9pm, followed by a county convention event the following Saturday, March 14. The Texas Green Party website has more information.

If you wish to participate in a Green Party precinct or county convention, you must not vote or participate in the primary or conventions of another party. The Texas Election Code uses the concept of “affiliation.” A person becomes affiliated with a political party by voting in a primary or participating in a convention of that party. The party affiliation expires at the end of the voting year (calendar year). You may vote for whomever you wish in the general election, regardless of party affiliation.

At the precinct convention, the voter will be given the following oath:

"I swear that I have not voted in a primary election or participated in a convention of another party during this voting year. I hereby affiliate myself with the Green Party."

You must be “affiliated” with the Green Party In order to be an officer, committee member, delegate, or participant in Green Party affairs. This means that you must be a registered voter in your county, and you must not be affiliated with any other party. You can become “affiliated” at the precinct or county convention.

If you want to set up a county Green Party in your county, the directions are given at the Texas Green Party website. In my opinion, the main function of the Green Party in advancing social justice and environmental progress is to find and support candidates to be on the ballot in Texas elections. Information such as listing local elected offices and the requirements and duties of elected officials is a good place to start. County level Green Party affiliates may wish to develop suggestions for dealing with issues and improving conditions at the local level. You may also wish to have social events and participate with local civic groups, charities, and community groups.
